Is Boris really free?
Yes. No in-app purchases, no premium tier, no subscription. Boris is free to download and use entirely.
How does Boris stay free?
Local businesses that serve the KMC community — restaurants, realtors, service providers — can apply to be verified and recommended in the Boris directory. They fund Boris; families never pay. We only accept businesses we’d genuinely recommend. If it’s not good enough for our own families, it’s not in Boris.
Do I need to create an account?
No account, no email address, no profile. You download it and use it. Your data stays on your device.
Does Boris track my location?
Only if you explicitly allow it to show nearby resources on the map — and only in that moment. Boris never tracks you in the background.
Is this an official DoD or Army app?
No. Boris is an independent project built by someone who has lived the KMC move. It’s not affiliated with the Department of Defense or any military branch.
What if information in the app is wrong or outdated?
We update Boris regularly and flag anything we’re uncertain about. If you spot something wrong, there’s a feedback button in the app and you can reach us at [email protected].
Does Boris work for GS civilians and contractors, not just military?
Yes. The checklists and directory adapt based on your status. OHA is different from LQA, and SOFA rights differ between military and contractor. Boris handles those differences.
What if my sponsor is already great?
Then you’re lucky — Boris will still be useful. Having a good sponsor and having good information aren’t mutually exclusive.
Does Boris work offline?
Core features — checklists, reminders, emergency numbers — work fully offline after the first download. The directory and map need a connection for fresh data.
Why not just use KMC Facebook groups?
Facebook groups are great for asking neighbors what they think. But the answers change depending on who’s online, they’re impossible to search, and nobody checks if the advice is still accurate. Boris gives you verified, sourced, current information — not someone’s two-year-old memory of how it worked when they arrived.
Can I use Boris before I leave the US?
Yes — and you should. Boris helps you prepare before you fly. Financial planning, document checklists, and knowing what to expect on day one are all available before you land in Germany.
